BRAWN AND BEAUTY: Works On Copper

Oil Paintings by RICHARD HAWK

Artist Reception
Saturday, September 10, 2011
6 - 9 pm

Exhibit runs August 16 to November 5, 2011

Richard Hawk Paintings On Copper

This exhibition of works by figurative painter Richard Hawk explores the use of copper sheeting as substrate while capturing both ends of the masculine/feminine spectrum of the human form. The beauty, grace, and flow of dancers in juxtaposition with the brawn, violent potential and pent up energy of boxers make for exquisite subject matter. At the same time, merging practices of traditional figurative painting and patinization of copper provides strange and wonderful contrasts of the artist’s mediums. The marriage of these extremely different elements in the work brings tension and balance to this extraordinary collection.

Richard Hawk is a San Diego area artist whose figurative paintings have taken awards in many national and international shows. With paintings in a number of collections in the US and Europe, his art works have appeared in The Artist's Magazine, Interior Design magazine and have been featured on ABC San Diego. He is represented by fine art galleries in the United States and Canada. Hawk is recognized as a popular workshop instructor, teaching methods of painting freely and intuitively. He is also principal of Copperhand Studio, devoted to creating works of art on copper. He paints and lives in Escondido, California.

Chinese Girl - Jian Wang

"Chinese Girl - Xiaolin"

Jian Wang Paintings

Show Dates: September 1 - October 30, 2010

L Street Fine Art Gallery

Jian Wang, a Sacramento-based artist who was born in China, paints traditional subjects while tempering realism with 20th century abstraction. Most recently, Jian Wang was selected to exhibit a 20-Year Retrospective at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing during the 2008 Summer Olympics. Always drawn to art even in childhood, Jian Wang had the opportunity to come to the United States in 1986 to study painting under Sacramento-based artists such as Wayne Thiebaud, Fred Dalkey, Jack Ogden, Manuel Neri, Roland Petersen and David Hollowell. Jian Wang describes his own painting style as a dialogue between himself and his subject. Using lush, impasto-style brushstrokes in vibrant colors, Jian Wang’s prolific abilities allow for a broad repertoire of subjects including landscapes, nudes, portraiture, and still-life. Jian Wang has exhibited his paintings all over the world, ranging from gallery shows in New York and London and museum exhibitions in China. His works are featured in more than 300 public and private collections worldwide.

Martin Facey

PLUCK: Seed Sow Scatter Sun and then Some: Paintings by Martin Facey

Show Dates: July 15 – August 31, 2010

L Street Fine Art Gallery

Since 2000 Facey’s series of paintings, drawings, and prints, collectively called “Seed”, are about seed germination, how life springs from tiny inert pods.  “PLUCK” is a collection of Facey’s most recent work in this series.  Facey explains,”’ Seed’ concerns all birth, how life begins anywhere.  Not what birth looks like, but rather the actual process itself.  ‘Seed’ reenacts the verb of growing, not the noun of seed.  Not what, but how.”

Facey uses fiberglass and Lucite as a painting surface, on which he works “in reverse,” building up images from behind the surface, with acrylic paints, intaglio, shallow relief sculpting and collage, resulting in lively and colorful images. His paintings come to life, according to Facey, as “the delicate marriage of exact planning and chaotic mutations.”

While in the process of earning BFA, MA, and MFA degrees at UCLA School of Arts in the 1960’s and 1970’s, Facey served as assistant to famed artist Richard Diebenkorn, his mentor in his early years as a painter.  In the 1980’s Facey was awarded a
Guggenheim Fellowship in Painting, followed by the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Painting.

In his most recent body of work, Facey explores the seed as a microcosmic metaphor for the creation of life.  According to Facey, “Birth is both content and process; union of end and means.” He considers his work as figurative, in that he sees the botanical seed as “a metaphor for all human beings, for all life forms” and that the viewer “understands that they are looking at a mirror.”

Facey, a resident of San Diego County since 2006, is a celebrated art educator. He taught design, color, painting, drawing, and graduate studies for two decades as Professor Emeritus at the University of New Mexico, where he also served as chair of the department of Art and Art History.  Facey currently teaches Design and Art History on the Oceanside campus of Mira Costa College.

Facey has had solo exhibitions in major cities throughout the country during his 30-year career, several of which were sell-out shows.  He currently lives and works in both Los Angeles and Vista, California.
